Transform a boring Spanish ABC lesson into a cultural lesson. Don’t just teach your Spanish students that A is for abeja and B is for barco. Use this first introduction to the ABCs in Spanish to add a cultural twist so that A is for alebrije and B is for bomba and C is for coqui.
I created a Hispanic culture version of the Spanish alphabet after realizing that this first Spanish lesson was often missing meaningful cultural content. I have been working to include culture in every part of my curriculum—not only during special cultural units. When we study food, I can introduce tapas instead of relying only on generic pictures of hamburgers and fries. When we discuss sports, I can include traditional games and popular sports from across the Spanish-speaking world. The Spanish ABCs offered another simple opportunity to make culture part of everyday learning.
What Is Included in This Hispanic Culture Alphabet?
Instead of pairing every letter with a random Spanish vocabulary word, each letter introduces students to a food, tradition, landmark, animal, instrument, or cultural symbol from the Spanish-speaking world. Students might learn about asado, bomba, coquí, ñandú, and zampoña as they practice the Spanish alphabet.
First Day of Spanish Class

Use this Alphabet of Spanish lesson during your first days of Spanish class. Before students can pronounce words or begin communicating, we generally teach them the ABCs in Spanish. Start with this version of the ABCs for an exciting twist.
If you’re planning your first week of lessons for middle or high school Spanish class, I recommend doing this on Day 5. Read the full schedule on this blog post. The first five days could look like this:

Spanish ABCs for Preschool and Elementary Students
You may be teaching preschool Spanish, and this Hispanic alphabet of Spanish is a great place to start for that age group, too!
This Spanish alphabet resource can also work well for preschool and elementary students. Younger learners can practice letter recognition through coloring, tracing, matching, and picture-based activities, while the cultural vocabulary introduces them to foods, animals, music, traditions, and other elements of the Spanish-speaking world. The posters can also be used during circle time, as a classroom word wall, or to create a simple mini abecedario booklet.
Spanish ABCs Bulletin Board
These posters make a beautiful display around your classroom. Now your ABC word wall doubles as cultural input. You can print and laminate the colored versions of the posters and hang them on a bulletin board or around the top of your classroom walls.
But a really fun way to get your students involved is to print out the black and white coloring page versions. Give each student one to color. Then, display their artwork!
Display this either the first month of school or during Hispanic Heritage Month. (You can even keep it up all year long, especially if you teach Spanish 1.)
Games and Activities for Spanish ABCs
- Flashcard matching: Have students match each cultural image with its Spanish word or definition.
- Gallery walk: Place the Spanish alphabet posters around the classroom and have students record the word connected to each letter.
- Mini alphabet book: Give each student a set of small cards to color, organize, and assemble into a personal abecedario.
- Class ABC project: Assign one letter to each student or pair and ask them to research its cultural topic.

Day of the Dead ABCs in Spanish

More Spanish ABC Books
