A teacher’s favorite words are “snow day,” “cake in the faculty lounge,”, and “free!” Well, I can’t control the weather or bake enough cakes for everyone, but I can give you a list of my top 5 favorite FREE Spanish teacher resources.
Newsela
Newsela is not just an authentic news article website, it is SO much more. First of all, there is a whole Spanish library of news articles, separated by category. Once you find an article that fits your lesson, you can change the word count. This allows all your students to read the same article, get the same main points and supporting details, but each article will include different syntax and vocabulary based on the word count. Secondly, there are two activities that Newsela generates for the articles. One is a reading comprehension quiz that provides a test in Spanish for your students to do while they read the article. The other one is a writing prompt, in Spanish! Differentiation and assessments already done for you. Here are entire lessons (spanning over a few days) based on one article from Newsela: Earthquakes in Mexico, Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
Quizlet
Quizlet is perfect for introducing new vocabulary. Students have access to all the vocabulary and can practice with interactive games in the classroom or at home. For teachers, we can share materials, create tests, and have fun with our students. There are so many reasons to love Quizlet, I have a whole list why you should try it in your class.
Video ele
On Videoele, you will find different levels and themes of videos, all in Spanish. The videos range from teaching you how to count in Spanish to the classic rivalry between Barcelona and Madrid’s soccer teams to major festivals and cultural events in Spanish speaking countries.
Not only does Videoele provide us with videos, but each one comes equipped with the transcription, a worksheet packet for students to follow along, an answer key, and online activities. One videoele video can serve as a whole lesson with the amount of free resources that come with it!
Georgia standards
The Georgia Dept. of Education has an incredible amount of communicative activities for various themes. Once you find your level and theme, there is a document that lists activities and assessments. One of the reasons I really love this site is that all the activities are authentic and based on real-life situations. Students can see how using Spanish will be practical in the real-world!
Zachary Jones
This website is filled with resources for every theme and grammatical concept you could want – and they are fun activities! You can find songs, video clips, memes, and more related to the various units you may teach. You will even find worksheets, transcripts, and activities for each resource.
