When learning, students are not often aware of how they are learning, what they are learning, or even the progress they are making. It is important that they understand and are aware of all three of these things. We are lucky in the world language field because ACTFL has made “Can-Do statements.” Do your students know what they are? Have they ever seen these statements? If we subtly introduce our students to these statements, they will be able to see what they can do and will take pride in their language learning at the same time!
Use “Yo puedo” worksheets to track student growth, keep yourself focused on unit objectives, and inform parents and admin of student progress. Download my versions here!
How to Use “Yo puedo” worksheets:
Version 1 – Fill in the circles with objectives for the unit. (You can even have your students do this!) Students should reflect on what they already CAN do. If they can do it, they should initial that circle, you could initial it, or you could get a stamp. When you walk around and observe your students and you see them doing something on the worksheet, give them a stamp and an extra boost of confidence!
Version 2 – I think this version works best with advanced students because they get to reflect at different points in the unit. There are three blank boxes for dates at the top. At the beginning of the unit, students should complete the worksheet using a specific color pen. Then, half-way through the unit, students should re-evaluate and use a different color pen. Finally, at the end of the unit, choose another color and make the final evaluations. This visual will show true growth and excitement for your students.
Keep your students thinking positively with Can Do statements!
