As a teacher you know it is more stressful to take a day off than it is to be at school with your students. Planning lessons for a sub is mentally exhausting, so take some of that stress away by using some of these easy ideas. They can easily be tied to your current unit, so students will not be off topic; you’re essentially just giving them independent practice with the vocabulary, grammar, and content of your current unit!
Create Your Own Quiz: Students will create a 15 question multiple-choice quiz based on the current topics in your class. They can then pass the quiz to a partner who will take it. Bonus idea! Tell them you will use some of their questions on upcoming tests/quizzes. You can edit my template and give students topics and sample questions.
Read a current events article: Give students options by allowing them to choose a current events article that interests them. Use one of the 3 templates here for students to summarize and reflect on news articles. You could even provide them with specific news articles at their proficiency level by using the Spanish library on www.newsela.com
Grammar Drills: These can be very boring to do when you are teaching the class, but boy oh boy are grammar drills helpful for our students! Give them a few basic worksheets to review present, preterite, concordancia, etc. View my present tense packet here!
Write a Story: Using present tense and vocabulary from the current unit, students should write a story. Give them requirements: i.e. how many vocab words, transition words, adjectives, etc. Then they should highlight/underline all the verbs. They should now re-read their story and change the story to past tense or future tense, etc.
Create a vocabulary book: This is a great way for students to get some extra practice with vocabulary. They will cut out and piece together their own book. Each page gives space for the word, a drawing, and a sentence or definition. Download my free template here!
All of these sub plans require little to no prep time for you! Don’t stress over taking a day off from work with these ideas!
