Advice for Traveling to Machu Picchu

As a Spanish teacher, I love traveling to Spanish-speaking countries to be immersed in the culture, speak the language, and explore different parts of our world.  In 2017, I traveled to Peru and visited Machu Picchu, which was the best trip I have ever been on.

Words cannot fully describe the beauty you will experience when you go to Machu Picchu.  It is breathtaking and unforgettable.  You want to make the most of this visit, so I am sharing my tips with you.

  • Take the train (PeruRail or IncaRail) the day prior to your Machu Picchu tickets.  Stay overnight in Aguas Calientes.  There are very limited train times, so I think it is best to get there the day before and get settled.  You can explore the very small, quaint town of Aguas Calientes.  There are some hot springs and a museum if you time your train ticket correctly.  Other than that, don’t expect to do much in Aguas Calientes.
  • Another benefit to getting to Aguas Calientes the day before is that you can get the bus ticket for the trip up the mountain and you won’t need to worry about it the next morning.  Of course, if you plan to hike up the mountain you can do that instead.  I recommend the bus so you save all of your energy for Machu Picchu.
  • Get up early and get in line!  Get in that bus line by 4:30 a.m.  The line will probably already be pretty long, but once the buses start rolling up, you will be amazed at how quickly the line moves.  I made it up to Machu Picchu for sunrise and that was a sight to see.
  • Do one of the two hikes (Huayana Picchu or Montaña Picchu).  Both hikes require advance tickets.  Each of these hikes leads you to a very different view.  This is what I saw at the top of Huayana Picchu.  The hike was daunting and if you are scared of heights you may have trouble.  But, to be able to climb to the very top of a mountain and get an overlook such as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
  • Become familiar with the history of Machu Picchu prior to going.  Learn about the different sections of the ruins and familiarize yourself with everything.  Bring a map with you, too.
  • Take food and water with you, as there will be nothing at the ruins to eat.  You will want to explore for a while, so be sure to pack enough.
  • I went in July, and the weather was cold in the morning, but once you get moving, you will warm right up.  The sun can be strong so don’t forget sunscreen!
