I am only beginning my fourth year of teaching this year, but have learned so much, especially during my first year. It can be intimidating and scary to walk into a school with veteran teachers. You might feel like a deer in headlights at many moments. However, there are so many people there to support you! I hope these tips help you as you begin your career! Best of luck!
- Find a mentor! Your school may provide you with an experienced teacher as your mentor, and if they do that is great. If not, find someone that is willing to help you when you need it. Ask them if they would be your mentor. No matter how you connect with a mentor, talk to them. Frequently! They are filled with ideas and experience that are invaluable. I still talk to my first-year mentor, and we aren’t even in the same school district any more!
- Use Pinterest. There is no need to spend hours upon hours planning, when there are already so many resources at our disposal. You will be surprised how many free resources you can find that fit your theme, lesson, and unit!
- Never respond to a parent email immediately. You may be writing with your emotions if you respond immediately; you may even forget something important you should have mentioned. Take time to think it over. Ask a colleague to read your response prior to hitting send.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is better to ask the question than to make a mistake and need to fix it.
- Take time for yourself. You may feel the need to bring ‘school’ home with you each night. That is not healthy for you or your family. Make sure to create time in your schedule for you and your family.
- Relax! Everyone at your school was once in your position as a new teacher. They are there to help you. They want you to succeed because they want what is best for the students. We all do!
