End of the Year Student Survey for World Language Teachers

Elon Musk once said, “Some people don’t like change, but you need to embrace change if the alternative is disaster.” Without being open to change, our classrooms could be headed toward disaster mode!  Imagine teaching the exact same lessons, with the exact same materials, year after year after year. You don’t make any modifications for your students. You don’t incorporate any of the ever-evolving technological resources, or find new authentic resources. My first thought is, well okay that would be awfully boring.  But the more I think about it, Elon Musk is right… that type of classroom teacher is headed right for disaster. To avoid disaster, I am open to change, and with an end of the year student survey, I am showing my students that I am open to change, open to hearing their opinions, open to being a better teacher.

Every year, I assign a Google Forms end of the year student survey. I absolutely love reading my students’ responses to these questions!  Students are honest… sometimes brutally honest, but we need to hear what they have to say. There are lessons that I absolutely love, but am surprised that it did not click with my students. With their feedback, you can guide your planning for next year in a student-led way, being conscious of their learning styles, your classroom environment, and the most successful (and least successful) activities!  Take a few moments out of the last days of school to give an end of the year student survey, and get started on the right foot for the next school year!
I am providing you with my end of the year student survey HERE for FREE! I even modified it for 6 languages – Spanish, Italian, French, German, Chinese, and Japanese. All of the questions are the same and in English, but the header and questions correspond to the language.

It is so important to ask a variety of questions that will really get the most information out of your students. It is not enough just to ask what activities they liked. You have to take it a step further – why did they like it or why did it help them learn? When you get to the root of the activity, then you can create similar activities.  The same goes for activities and units that they did not like, make sure you ask why!  To save yourself time, make sure you download the end of the year student survey I mentioned above – I include all of these questions and more!
Make sure you save this blog post or pin the image below so you remember to do this every year!  I’ll be assigning this in the next few weeks, and I am looking forward to reading their responses. How do you wrap up the year with your students?
